Words of a Mother and Volunteer

My daughter and I first started borrowing toy boxes from the Toy Lending Library in 2020, when she was an infant. Her skills were advancing faster than I could afford to buy her new toys. As a new mom, I was so excited and grateful to have access to a variety of toys without having to purchase them all.

Since then, we have continued to borrow toy boxes for both of my children (now 4 and 2), I became a volunteer and started helping by cleaning toys and packing new boxes, and now I am able to help develop boxes that are more accessible to families with children with disabilities. We are also working on adding “skill labels” to all of their toy boxes. This helps parents be able to quickly see what skills each toy works on so they can choose what is appropriate for their child.
I have a bachelor’s degree in special education, and used to be a special education teacher in Sioux Falls before becoming a stay-at-home mom. The Toy Lending Library does an amazing job making sure they have a variety toys that meets the needs of many different developmental levels of children. They also strive to create a strong sense of community and keep a focus on sustainability.
The team at the Toy Lending Library work together to create boxes that will impact children all throughout the community. They are passionate about getting toys into the hands of those who would not be able to purchase many developmentally appropriate toys. Libraries around the community and surrounding communities display the boxes to be checked out and the TLL attends many community events to get the word out about their amazing mission.
The Toy Lending Library has had an incredibly positive impact on myself and my children over the last 3+ years. My children eagerly look forward to each visit to the TLL, excited to explore and choose new toys to play with. The diverse selection ensures that there is always something new and stimulating. It is like having access to a toy store without the financial and environmental burden of constantly purchasing new toys. The Toy Lending Library has become an integral part of our routine, enhancing our lives with joy, learning, and community.
